A partir do conceito de família como instituição social que pode ser percebida como um sistema aberto, intergeracional, com um perímetro de geometria variável, com fluxos de entrada e de saída, seja por causas naturais ou por razões de ordem social, o principal objetivo desta comunicação consiste, através de uma revisão de literatura, discutir como a família empresária cria valor, através das gerações, para a sua sustentabilidade. A família empresária dispõe de recursos intrínsecos que pode disponibilizar às empresas em cuja propriedade participa. É esta vantagem que lhe vai garantir o perpetuar-se através das várias gerações. Este envolvimento é impulsionado pela orientação empreendedora e proatividade dos membros da família empresária, as quais são um habitus e um haver destas famílias. Partindo da análise do estado da arte, esta comunicação pretende contribuir para a acumulação de conhecimento neste domínio, bem como para a delineação de modelos concetuais de análise deste fenómeno.
