Atrial fibrillation is a subtype of cardiac arrhythmia, being the most common. It corresponds to a disorganization of the electrical activity of the heart's atria, which lose their ability to contract, resulting in tachycardia. Vascular dementia, on the other hand, corresponds to a decrease in the ability to perform cognitive functions due to the occurrence of cerebral microinfarctions. The aim of this study was to analyze the correlation between atrial fibrillation and vascular dementia, in the presence or absence of stroke. In this integrative review, a bibliographic search was carried out in the Virtual Health Library, National Library of Medicine and Scientific Electronic Library Online. The Health Sciences Descriptors Atrial Fibrillation, Vascular Dementia, Stroke, Prognosis and Quality of Life were used. Thus, it was found that atrial fibrillation predisposes to the development of Cerebral Vascular Accident, since the blood trapped in the atria due to the loss of its ability to contract can lead to the formation of small clots, which when transported by the bloodstream to the brain may cause the aforementioned microinfarcts. Therefore, there may be a progressive loss of cognition compatible with vascular dementia itself, worsening prognosis and reduced quality of life.
